• How do I fix the issue? • How can I report the attacker? • Supplemental Account Security Information 1. What is a DoS/DDoS Attack? To start, the acronym stands for Denial of Service or Distributed Denial of Service.

The most common type of attack is ICMP flooding (aka IP flooding, ping flooding) in which, to put it simply, all internet-capable devices connected to the targeted IP Address (which could be any device connected to your home's router/gateway/modem) are kicked offline due to your bandwidth being occupied by an overwhelming number of ping/IP packets. An analogy would be it's your local area connection being 'choked' off. When an attack is distributed (see DDoS), it is being launched by several attackers to one target.

This requires more hardware than a single DoS attack and is a lot less uncommon across online gaming platforms. This type of attack is not Xbox Live specific, and is not launched through Xbox Live, but rather done with software which shows which displays all connected IP addresses. Attacks are launched straight to the IP address and not through the Xbox Live service.

Please do not discuss this kind of software on the forums as it is in violation of the Code of Conduct/Xbox.com Terms of Use. Am I being hacked? NO! A DoS attack is not a form of hacking in any sense. Being a victim of a DoS attack does not expose important account details such as log-in information and credit card numbers. It is, simply put, a way of harassing users by booting them off the internet. That doesn't mean it's not important to keep your account security in good shape. There is more info in part 5 of the FAQ.

As for hacking threats, I defer the next part to a quote by Xbox Forum Support agent Mister Gwyther's wise words. I'm being threatened to be 'hacked'! Strictly speaking, you cannot be 'hacked' on Xbox LIVE; that is to say no one can forcibly take your information from our servers. Please make sure that your Microsoft Account and password are both strong and secret. Do not share this information with ANYONE!

Also remember that no Microsoft of Xbox employee or support agent will ever ask you for this information. If someone on Xbox LIVE is threatening to 'hack' you, or they are asking for your Microsoft Account and/or password, you should let us know!

These activities are strictly against our Terms of Use and we are serious about its enforcement. Please file a complaint and block communications. Do your best not to instigate this kind of behaviour or provoke malicious attacks against you on Xbox Live.

It's recommended that you file a complaint, block, avoid and mute then move on if you are being harassed. More info on filing a complaint and blocking communications coming up!

How do I fix the issue? Read this part if you have been booted offline from a DoS Attack and cannot connect to the internet on your LAN-connected devices. To get your local area connection back online and up and running, please follow these instructions: • Turn off your Xbox 360 and network hardware. If you have a modem and router/gateway and router setup, please unplug both. • Wait 5 minutes+ before plugging in your network hardware. (In the event of DoS Attack, a longer wait time will require a full reset) • Turn on your modem/gateway (whichever device receives your source internet via cable/fibre/DSL) and wait for it to fully turn on and connect. (Up to 2 minutes) • Turn on your next piece of network hardware if applicable.

(Your wired/wireless router if applicable) • Turn on your Xbox 360 console. Once you’ve completed this restart of your hardware, test your Xbox LIVE connection: • Press the Guide button on your controller, select Settings, select System Settings, then select Network Settings. • Select the name of your Wireless Network, or select Wired Network for a wired connection. • Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection. A reset of your modem/gateway may have assigned you with a new IP address which would leave you safe from the same DoS attacker; they do not have your updated IP Address. Feel free to contact your ISP to report the DoS attack. If you still cannot connect to your network, please contact your ISP.
