Pentax Serial Number Database

Does anyone know how Pentax serial numbers work? Specifically I'm interested in MX serial numbers, but more generally would be interesting too. Reason for asking is that I'm just about to get my two MXs CLA'd, so I was writing down their serial numbers (being a paranoid system admin type person.) and I noticed that one was 4xxxxxx and the other 9yyyyyy, and was wondering idly what that meant in terms of years, if the numbers are just sequential (so there were at least 9 million odd made) etc. Just curiosity really, I suppose. Thanks --tim.

Hi Tim, Without getting obsessive.I have owned MX cameras since shortly after they were released in early 1977 and a few years ago became interested in how many were made, so started to jot down numbers as I came across them to try to work it out. Pentax serial numbers were in the 7000000s for the K2 cameras and in the 8000000s for the KX cameras of 1975 - 1976. The earliest MX serial number I have seen is 9137994, which was the body tested by Modern Photography magazine in early 1977, and the numbers then progressed through to at least 9535433. I haven't seen any higher numbers in the 9000000s; perhaps these numbers were allocated to MEs, or someone here can supply a higher one. Then they restarted the serial numbers for MXs at 4000000 (jumping over the 1000000s, 2000000s and 3000000s reserved for the later MEs, then the MV, ME Super etc).

I own 44561xx, the youngest MX number I've seen. Perhaps someone reading this will have a later unit they can report.

All up, that would seem to indicate that only about a million MXs were built. As for actual purchase dates, I bought MX 9170511 in about March of 1977, 93327xx in April 1978 and 40301xx in October 1979. All were bought new in Hong Kong, where turnover would have been fast. Again, perhaps others here can add purchase dates of new MX cameras that can add to the story. The A series cameras and lenses were introduced in 1983 and presumably the last few years of MX sales would have been from earlier production runs. I have noticed several minor changes that took place through to the MX during its manufacture.mainly deletions of engraving.but that's another story! I too would like to see a resource showing serial number referenced to manufacture date.

I got my MX used last year, so that doesn't further the info, but. It's a hybrid, originally with serial # 424xxxx but it must have been doused with water which then sat in the baseplate for some time and corroded the bottom, the lens mount, the circuit board, etc. When it was refurbished, these were replaced by parts from ser # 436xxxx. Since the serial number is stamped into the baseplate, the camera now bears this slightly later number.
