Hello everyone, I've found that annoying problem with wireless card drivers for Ralink RT61 card. The newest driver from their website (PCI/mPCI/CB(RT256x/RT266x)) is causing hard freezing in x64 system (Win 7 and also Win Vista). The same buggy driver is installed by Windows itself. One of older drivers works without freezing, but it limits the network bandwidth. I was forced to switch on new wireless card because of this problem. So, I'm asking, if here is anyone who could help the others (yeah, I'm not the only one who has this problem) with this issue.

Thanks and best wishes! I have the same with my Ralink wireless card - to get it working the only way is to install the drivers that came on the disc ( ignore microsoft's one ) then reboot. Go to device manager you will notice that the drivers haven't been updated with the Vendor's one and are still using Microsoft's one, update the drivers and select choose from list of drivers you will then see the vendor's drivers and install them 6/10 it crashes and hard boots BUT the drivers will have installed.

You;d need to go to properties of the drivers to configure them as the crash would have caused the confguration to reset to defaul rather than your native configuraton. Better a late reply than never, but this problem has to do with the current driver set and having more than 3 gigs of RAM. Even though it is a 64-bit driver, it seemingly has problems when 4 gigs or more are installed on a system.

If you remove the extra RAM, you will see your system no longer crashes. I am well aware this is not an ideal solution, but it is one that is effective. I suggest using it as a holdover until you can buy another wireless card as the OP did. This is a lingering problem and I haven't found any other way around it. I can confirm that using v2.0.3.0 I have also been able to eliminate the freezing associated with the later drivers, so thank you for your advice! There is one caveat however, and that is the v2.0.3.0 driver has a 'stuttering issue' in the capacity that online games sensitive to traffic flow (like first person shooters) tend to 'lag' once every few minutes. This appears to be conincidental with the card automatically scanning for new networks and this problem doesn't exist in later drivers, however as we all know, the later drivers have other faults! Any workarounds for this 'scanning' problem would be gratefully received.
